Overview

What Is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery or ear pinning, is a cosmetic procedure designed to reshape, reposition, or resize the ears. This procedure improves ear symmetry and brings prominent ears closer to the head.

What Problems Can Otoplasty Correct?

Otoplasty can improve several concerns:

  • Protruding or prominent ears
  • Asymmetrical ears
  • Large ears (macrotia)
  • Congenital ear shape irregularities
  • Ear deformities after trauma

Who Is a Good Candidate for Otoplasty?

You may be a suitable candidate if you:

  • Have prominent ears
  • Feel uncomfortable with ear shape
  • Have asymmetrical ears
  • Are in good general health
  • Have realistic expectations

What Is Ear Pinning Surgery?

Ear pinning surgery is a common type of otoplasty used to reposition ears that stick out too far from the head. The surgeon reshapes the ear cartilage and secures it closer to the head.

What Is Closed Otoplasty (Scarless Otoplasty)?

Closed otoplasty, also referred to as scarless otoplasty, thread ear aesthetics, or suture otoplasty, is a minimally invasive technique used to correct prominent ears without making large incisions. In this technique, special sutures are used to reshape and reposition the ear cartilage. This approach may leave little or no visible scar because it does not require a traditional incision behind the ear.

Is Scarless Otoplasty Suitable for Everyone?

Scarless or thread otoplasty is not suitable for all patients. It is usually appropriate for patients with mild to moderate ear prominence and good cartilage flexibility. Patients with severe ear deformities or very stiff cartilage may require traditional otoplasty surgery.

How Is Traditional Otoplasty Performed?

Otoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. A small incision is made behind the ear, the cartilage is reshaped or repositioned, and sutures are used to secure the new position.

How Long Does Otoplasty Surgery Take?

Otoplasty typically takes between 1 and 2 hours depending on the surgical technique and complexity.

What Is Recovery Like After Otoplasty?

Typical recovery timeline:

  • 3–5 days: swelling and mild discomfort
  • 7–10 days: return to work or school
  • Several weeks: swelling gradually decreases
  • 2–3 months: final ear shape becomes visible

Are Otoplasty Results Permanent?

Otoplasty usually provides long-lasting and permanent results because the ear cartilage is permanently reshaped.

Does Otoplasty Leave Scars?

In traditional otoplasty, the incision is usually hidden behind the ear. In closed or scarless otoplasty techniques, visible scarring is minimal or absent.

Is Otoplasty Surgery Painful?

Most patients experience mild swelling, tenderness, and temporary discomfort rather than significant pain.

Can Otoplasty Be Combined with Other Procedures?

Otoplasty may be combined with other facial procedures such as chin surgery, facelift, or facial rejuvenation procedures.

What Is Prominent Ear Surgery?

Prominent ear surgery is another term used for procedures that reposition protruding ears closer to the head.

What Is the Difference Between Otoplasty and Ear Pinning?

Ear pinning is a specific type of otoplasty that focuses on correcting prominent ears.

What Age Is Best for Otoplasty?

Otoplasty can be performed in children after the age of 5–7 when ear development is nearly complete. Adults can also undergo ear surgery safely.

How Long Do Otoplasty Results Last?

Otoplasty results are usually permanent unless the ear is affected by trauma later in life.

Is Male Otoplasty Surgery Common?

Male otoplasty surgery is commonly performed in men who wish to correct prominent ears and improve facial balance.
