Overview

What Is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, also called mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that lifts and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening surrounding tissue.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Lift Surgery?

You may be a suitable candidate if you:

  • Have sagging breasts (breast ptosis)
  • Notice nipples pointing downward
  • Lost breast firmness after pregnancy or weight loss
  • Want improved breast shape and position

What Causes Breast Sagging?

Breast sagging may occur due to aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, genetics, and loss of skin elasticity.

How Is Breast Lift Surgery Performed?

Breast lift surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. Excess skin is removed, breast tissue is reshaped, and the nipple–areola complex is repositioned to a higher position.

What Types of Breast Lift Techniques Exist?

There are several mastopexy techniques depending on the degree of breast sagging:

  • Crescent lift
  • Periareolar (donut) lift
  • Vertical (lollipop) lift
  • Anchor lift (inverted-T)

Can Breast Lift Be Combined with Implants?

Yes. Breast lift with implants combines mastopexy with breast augmentation to restore volume while lifting the breast.

Can Breast Lift Be Done Without Implants?

Yes. Breast lift without implants reshapes existing breast tissue without increasing breast size.

What Is Recovery Like After Breast Lift?

Typical recovery timeline:

  • 3–5 days: swelling and mild discomfort
  • 1 week: return to light activities
  • 2–4 weeks: swelling gradually decreases
  • 4–6 weeks: return to full physical activity

Are Breast Lift Results Permanent?

Breast lift results are long-lasting, although natural aging and gravity continue over time.

Does Breast Lift Leave Scars?

Breast lift surgery leaves scars that are typically placed around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease. Over time these scars usually fade significantly.

Is Breast Lift Surgery Painful?

Most patients experience mild soreness, swelling, and tightness during the first days after surgery.

What Is Mastopexy?

Mastopexy is the medical term used for breast lift surgery.

How Long Do Breast Lift Results Last?

Breast lift results may last many years depending on lifestyle, aging, and weight stability.

What Is Mastopexy Recovery Time?

Mastopexy recovery time usually ranges from 1–2 weeks for daily activities and about 4–6 weeks for full recovery.
