Eyebrow Transplantation – Natural, Permanent Eyebrow Restoration
Eyebrow transplantation is a refined microsurgical procedure designed to restore or enhance eyebrow density using the patient’s own hair follicles. Unlike temporary cosmetic solutions such as microblading or tattooing, eyebrow transplantation provides a permanent and natural-appearing result, because living follicles are implanted into the eyebrow region. The donor hairs are usually taken from the scalp — most often from the back of the head — where follicles are genetically stable. Great care is taken to match the direction, curvature and natural eyebrow growth, making the artistic planning of the procedure just as important as the surgical technique itself.
Eyebrow restoration can be performed using FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) — where a strip of scalp skin is removed and follicles are dissected under a microscope. Although FUT is still a valid technique in experienced hands, modern practice has largely shifted toward long-to-long brow transplantation. Here, individual follicles are harvested one by one using very fine punches and implanted directly with precise control over angle, depth and direction — which are critical for eyebrow design.
Who Is — and Is Not — a Good Candidate?
Ideal candidates for eyebrow transplantation include individuals with thinning, sparse or missing eyebrows due to genetics, over-plucking, trauma, burns, scarring, aging, or previous cosmetic tattooing. Patients should have sufficient donor hair, stable general health, and realistic expectations about natural density and growth patterns. This procedure is particularly beneficial for people seeking a permanent alternative to cosmetic eyebrow enhancement methods.
However, eyebrow transplantation is not suitable for everyone. Contraindications include active inflammatory skin disease, uncontrolled autoimmune or scarring conditions affecting the brow area, unstable alopecia areata, severe psychiatric or body-image disorders, and unrealistic expectations. Patients must also understand that scalp hair grows faster than eyebrow hair — meaning periodic trimming will be required. A careful consultation ensures medical and psychological suitability before treatment is offered.
Procedure & Recovery
Eyebrow transplantation is performed under local anesthesia, meaning the patient remains comfortable and awake throughout the procedure. The surgery typically takes 3–6 hours, depending on the number of follicles required. After implantation, minor swelling and redness may occur for a few days. When performed by an experienced specialist, the results are soft, natural and harmonious with facial features.
Will the transplanted eyebrow hairs keep growing like scalp hair?
Yes — because the follicles come from the scalp, they grow like scalp hair and may need trimming every 1–2 weeks.
Is the procedure painful?
No. It is performed under local anesthesia. Mild tightness or sensitivity afterward is common but temporary.
Can FUT, FUE or DHI all be used for eyebrow restoration?
Yes. FUT may be used in selected cases, but FUE and especially DHI are now preferred due to precision control and minimal scarring.
Are the results permanent?
Yes — transplanted follicles are permanent, although aging-related thinning may still occur over time.
How many grafts are usually needed?
Most patients require 150–400 grafts per eyebrow, depending on thickness goals and existing density.
