Breast augmentation with fat transfer
Breast augmentation with fat transfer, also known as fat grafting or lipofilling, uses the patient’s own fat cells to increase breast volume. It is a modest, natural alternative to implants when enough donor fat is available.

Breast augmentation with fat transfer, also known as fat grafting breast augmentation or lipofilling, is a cosmetic procedure that enhances breast size using the patient’s own fat cells.
Who is a good candidate?
You may be a suitable candidate if you:
- Want a natural alternative to breast implants
- Prefer modest breast enlargement
- Have enough body fat for harvesting
- Want body contouring and breast enhancement at the same time
- Are in good overall health
How is the procedure performed?
The procedure is usually performed in three stages:
- Fat harvesting using liposuction from areas such as the abdomen or thighs
- Fat purification to isolate healthy fat cells
- Fat injection into the breast tissue to increase volume and improve shape
How much enlargement is possible?
Fat transfer typically increases breast size by about half to one cup size. Some patients may require more than one session to achieve their desired volume.
What are the advantages?
Fat grafting breast augmentation offers several advantages:
- Natural look and feel
- No foreign implants
- Minimal scarring
- Simultaneous body contouring
- Improved breast symmetry
How does it differ from implants?
Breast implants allow a larger increase in breast size using silicone or saline implants. Fat transfer uses the patient’s own fat and provides subtle, natural breast enhancement.
What is recovery like?
A typical recovery timeline:
- 3-5 days: swelling and bruising
- 1 week: return to daily activities
- 2-3 weeks: swelling gradually decreases
- Several months: final results become visible
How long do results last?
A portion of the transferred fat survives permanently, while some fat may be naturally absorbed by the body during healing.
Does it leave scars?
The procedure uses very small liposuction incisions which usually leave minimal scars.
Is it safe?
When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, fat transfer breast augmentation is considered a safe cosmetic procedure.
Can it be combined with other procedures?
Fat transfer is often combined with breast lift surgery, liposuction, or hybrid breast augmentation techniques.
Related terms
Natural breast augmentation usually refers to breast enlargement using fat transfer instead of implants.
Lipofilling is another term used for fat grafting where purified fat cells are injected into the breasts.
Hybrid breast augmentation combines breast implants with fat transfer to improve shape and achieve a natural contour.
